100th Day of School

I must say, that as a teacher (maybe it is because I have always taught grades 2 through 5), I never really understood why we celebrate the 100th day… But as a mom of a kindergartener and a first grader, I understand the sheer excitement that they have expressed about the upcoming 100th day for the last several days.

And as mom of these two girls that are growing up way too fast, I came to the disappointing realization, that this was the second and final time that making a hundredth day poster would consume our February nights!  I mean I could really care less about making anymore 100th Day posters… it’s just my babies are growing up!

Last year, when presented with her 100th Day poster assignment, Kirsten opted to take the creative route. Which of course meant putting mommy to work.  I like a girl with a plan! Her idea was to create a winter scene with 100 cotton ball snowflakes.  In the center she wanted, who else, but herself ice skating on a lake like a “fancy ice skater.” When I mention that we did not have any photos of her looking very fancy on skates, she replied, “Well you can just make one!”

Oh how smart my munchkin of just 5 was!  Of course mommy could find a photo of a fancy skater and superimpose her daughter’s head on it…

Julia’s personality was completely and totally reflected in her 100th Day creation as well.  My quick and carefree child wanted 100 hearts… no discussion of options… no cares for conversation of the millions of possibilities.  Just hearts… and those hearts had to be glued inside hearts…

I digress back to my disheartening realization that this might very well be our final 100th day celebration… so why not celebrate with a 100th Day dinner (which, of course, is an excuse to make pancakes for dinner)!  These were not our favorite cake batter pancakes, but is there a child out there that would pass up pancakes and 100 (give or take 100) sprinkles?

The best part of the day was when Julia crawled into bed this evening. Just like every other night, she asked if she could wear a dress tomorrow.  And just like every other night, I supply my routine answer of either, “yes” (if she opted for a non-dress option that day) or tonight’s answer, “no, you picked the dress for today, so tomorrow we will wear the other outfit.”

Even though my girls are growing up way too fast, Julia’s response captured her innocence (which I hope she will never outgrow). “But Mommy if today was the 100th day then tomorrow is my last day of school and I really want to wear a dress on the last day of school.”

Be My Valentine

Groundhog’s Day each year is not just a sign of how much longer winter will be… No, for the Clarke girls February 2nd is also a reminder that we must begin making Valentines!

Yes folks, in the Clarke house we follow the practice of homemade valentines. This of course is more time consuming than store-bought fun, but thank goodness my girls (well at least Kirsten) has the patience to craft with me.

A quick brainstorming session with Kirsten & Julia generated this list…

Valentine’s Day is:
Hearts
Valentines
Candy
Hugs
Flowers
Kisses
Fun

With some help from Google and Pinterest, the keywords Valentine’s Day, kisses and lips, led us to this adorable idea, which was easily replicated with some red and brown cardstock and simple tags printed on white paper.

I also had to share the Valentine’s treats made for Julia’s kindergarten class. I'll let you in on my super time saver… boxed cake mix and canned frosting... GASP!  Listen, 5 and 6 years could care less! We of course spent the time fancying them up with red food coloring in the batter, pink and white twist frosting, and the piece de resistance… a big, fat, heart shaped strawberry cream peep!

A Year of the Snake Read Aloud

So it all started Friday just after noon... the snow that is!  And with snowfall totaling just under a foot... it made for a weekend of sledding and skating fun. Although Monday's rain cleared most of the snow in my neck of Long Island away... school still needed to be cancelled in the district where I work.

I must admit that I have a love/hate relationship with snow days.  As fun as it is to wake up to school being closed... as a teacher I know that what they giveth, they also taketh away. But we shall focus on the positive... an unexpected day off for me and school for my girls.

As the laundry list of things I might do unfolds in my head (much needed pedicure, trip to the mall)  I realized that my unexpected day off also gives me an opportunity to visit my daughters' school. A school where teachers are in need of mystery guest readers for PARP week. So I shoot a quick email to my daughter's awesome first grade teacher... who, of course, writes back at 7:30 am to tell me I have scored a spot as a reader at 3:00.  Perfect!

But what to read to the class? As a teacher, I take this very seriously!  My students know that I wholeheartedly believe that not every book is meant to be read aloud and that if I don't love it, I have very hard time reading it to others.

So theme first...
the PARP theme is s'mores/camping... can't think of any good camping books
Valentine's Day is this week.... eh!
hmmmmmm... Chinese New Year was Sunday.....
it is the year of the snake...
A classic I loved as a kid, Crictor, about a French woman who receives a boa constrictor as a gift, came to mind.

So after the pedicure and before some shopping, I squeezed in a trip to one of my favorite places... the library!  But low and behold, Crictor was unavailable.  Defeated!  So I quickly googled fiction books about snakes and found My Snake Blake, by Randy Siegel, which was available.

My Snake Blake was perfect in so many ways.  It is a smart and funny story about a boy who receives an exceptional pet snake for an early birthday present. Blake can spell, does math and is even a trivia buff. Best of all, he is also a great friend.

Well, Miss Rosolino's class and Kirsten LOVED Blake and the fortune cookies (which I found in these cute little take out containers at Dollar Tree) we gave out after our read!

Gung Hay Fat Choy! Happy Year Of The Snake!

The year of the snake has officially begun and like years past, the Clarke girls like to celebrate with some Chinese New Year fun!

As I pondered what fun creation the girls and I could make to celebrate, it all became clear. Since tangerines and oranges are lucky Chinese New Year symbols... Why not make orange Jello slices for our dinner celebration?

I must admit that this year's idea was slightly selfish... okay, totally selfish.  You see, I have been dying to make those cute Jello shots in oranges or lemons that everyone is pinning.  But I certainly haven't thrown a party with guests looking to do a shot or two in some time.

So with just a few oranges and a box of Jello, I was off and running!

Just cut!
This orange seemed to want to sit sideways, so I cut him across the navel.

Scoop!

1 cup boiling
1 cup cold

Fill!

And chill!

Delicious!

Lunar New Year

Tomorrow, February 10, is the Chinese New Year! And although we are not Chinese, nor Asian, we still love to celebrate this holiday in little ways.

Fortune Cookies

After writing our own fortunes, we followed a simple fortune cookie recipe like this one from allrecipes.com.  Even though they are simple to make, unfortunately shaping the cookies is not a very kid friendly process.  The cookies must be molded as soon as they come out of the oven, so they are way too hot to be handled by children.

 Candy Sushi

Another sweet treat we tried was candy sushi made from:

Rice Krispie Treats

Rainbow Twizzlers

Fruit Roll-Ups

After whipping up a batch of Rice Krispie Treats, we rolled them into logs with a Rainbow Twizzler tucked inside.

We then wrapped our sushi with Fruit Roll-Ups to cover the outside.

We sliced them into sections with a sharp knife.

I am not sure if the girls had more fun eating them or trying to pick them up with chopsticks!

How will we welcome the Year of the Snake... you will have to wait until tomorrow to find out!

A Rapunzel Cupcake Tower

A friend recently asked me for the details on the Rapunzel cupcake tower I made for Julia's 4th birthday Tangled bash.   So here we go...

I began by creating a base for the tower, which I constructed out of styrofoam and a wood dowel. A word of advice... hot glue and styrofoam DO NOT mix... waiting for craft glue to dry is a bore, but works so much better.  After the glue dried, I simply covered the base with green scrapbook paper.

While waiting for the glue to dry, I whipped up my favorite vanilla cupcake mix and baked eight cupcakes without liners in a standard muffin pan.  While the cupcakes cooled, I put the finishing touches on the tower base.

Once the cupcakes cooled, I stacked them in an alternating pattern of top to top... bottom to bottom...

I then decorated the tower with green frosting ivy and an inverted ice cream sugar cone coated in purple chocolate to finish it off.
